Post Date: June 8, 2026 | Publish Date:
Following a national search, Cincinnati Children’s has named Mary Greiner, MD, MS, as the next director of the Mayerson Center for Safe and Healthy Children, effective July 1. She succeeds Robert Shapiro, MD, who will retire June 30 after 42 years of service to Cincinnati Children’s.
Greiner is a professor of Pediatrics and a nationally recognized leader in child abuse pediatrics and foster care health. After completing her Child Abuse Pediatrics Fellowship at Cincinnati Children’s in 2011, she founded the CHECK (Comprehensive Health Evaluations for Cincinnati’s Kids) Foster Care Center in 2012, where she now serves as its medical director. Under her leadership, CHECK has become a national model for providing multidisciplinary, evidence-based care to children involved in the child welfare system while advancing innovative research to improve health outcomes for vulnerable youth.
Throughout her career, Greiner has focused on understanding and addressing the complex medical, developmental, behavioral and mental health needs of children affected by abuse, neglect and foster care involvement. Her research and clinical work have helped shape new approaches to care, leveraging partnerships across Cincinnati Children’s and the community to better serve children and families.
“Dr. Greiner is an exceptional clinician, researcher and leader whose career has been dedicated to improving the lives of children at risk,” said William Brinkman, MD, MEd, MSc, director of the Division of General and Community Pediatrics. “We look forward to her leadership of the Mayerson Center and her continued leadership of the CHECK Center. Please join us in congratulating Dr. Greiner on her new role and thanking Dr. Shapiro for his extraordinary contributions to Cincinnati Children’s and the field of child abuse pediatrics.”
The Mayerson Center is internationally recognized for its leadership in the prevention, evaluation and treatment of child abuse and neglect. Under Greiner’s direction, the center will continue its mission of advancing clinical care, research, education and advocacy to improve the safety and wellbeing of children.
