David Gius, MD, PhD, committed to assuring no Tristate resident will need to leave Cincinnati for cutting-edge treatment
The University of Cincinnati Cancer Center has named David Gius, MD, PhD—a leading expert in breast and lung radiation oncology—as its next director. He begins his role July 1, 2026.
The center was launched in January 2020 to further unify cancer research and care programs among the University of Cincinnati, UC Health, and Cincinnati Children’s and pursue recognition as a National Cancer Institute (NCI) designated cancer center.
Gius comes to Cincinnati from the Mays Cancer Center at UT Health San Antonio MD Anderson, where he served as associate cancer center director for translational research and assistant dean for research. In previous roles he has served as chief of the molecular radiation oncology section at the National Cancer Institute and in posts with Vanderbilt and Northwestern universities.
His research has helped advance understanding of how aging influences cancer risk. His work includes multiple publications detailing how age-related dysfunction of the sirtuin tumor suppression gene family affects risk of breast cancer in women and gastrointestinal cancers in men.
Gius says his vision for the Cancer Center is rooted in a commitment to ensuring that no resident of the Cincinnati region ever needs to leave the region for cutting-edge treatment.
“Our ultimate goal should be to provide not just outstanding, but superlative care to each and every person in our region,” he says. “If anyone in our community has an aggressive form of cancer, we can provide the clinical trials, experimental drugs and the newest therapies. They should feel comfortable that our Cancer Center provides the best and most up-to-date care for each and every one of them.”
