Garcia Named a Great Living Cincinnatian

Victor Garcia, MD, has been inducted into the 2017 class of Great Living Cincinnatians by the Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber.
The Founding Director of Trauma Services at Cincinnati Children’s joins fellow honorees William Butler, Charlene Ventura, and John Williams Jr., in the 2017 class.
Motivated by the alarming numbers of young gunshot victims rushed to Cincinnati Children’s, Garcia has devoted years to researching ways to reduce urban violence. He co-founded Cincinnati’s Initiative to Reduce Violence and the non-profit CoreChange. For this work, he received the National Jefferson Award for Outstanding Community Service.
Garcia’s parents left extreme poverty in Puerto Rico and immigrated to New York City. His father urged him to pursue admission to the United States Military Academy, where he became one of only five black students in the class of 1968.
Garcia earned his medical degree with honors in 1974 from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and completed residency training in pediatric surgery at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. He joined Cincinnati Children’s in 1988 after retiring as chief of general surgery and pediatric surgery services at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.
Garcia founded the trauma center at Cincinnati Children’s, Southwest Ohio’s only Level I Pediatric Trauma System.
