NBC News Now Features Mental Health Trajectories Project

A camera crew from NBC News Now visited recently to report on how experts at Cincinnati Children’s are tapping into the power of artificial intelligence to help address the mental health crisis facing children across America.

The story aired initially on May 4, 2023, and can be viewed here.

Cincinnati Children’s has invested more than $10 million to support the initial research to develop the mental health equivalent of a growth chart. The goal: to produce a tool that could be used by pediatricians, school nurses, social workers, and others to detect when a child’s mental and emotional development is beginning to run off-course.

The sheer complexity of the contributing factors at play has required the unprecedented step of engaging one of the world’s largest supercomputers (located at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee) to help the team test and refine their algorithm.
