Michael Seifert Named Nephrology Director

Nationally recognized physician-scientist joins Cincinnati Children’s Sept. 1

Michael Seifert

Michael Seifert, MD, MSCI, has been appointed director of the Division of Nephrology and Hypertension at Cincinnati Children’s. A nationally recognized physician-scientist in pediatric nephrology and transplantation, Seifert plans to step into this role September 1 and brings extensive experience in clinical care, research leadership and education.

Seifert currently serves as professor of pediatrics and medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Heersink School of Medicine, with appointments in both pediatric nephrology and adult nephrology. He is also the medical director and primary transplant physician for the Pediatric Kidney Transplant Program at Children’s of Alabama.

“Dr. Seifert’s expertise in kidney transplantation, proven research leadership and dedication to improving outcomes for children with kidney disease make him an outstanding choice to lead Cincinnati Children’s Division of Nephrology and Hypertension,” says Tina Cheng, MD, MPH, chair of Pediatrics, director, Cincinnati Children’s Research Foundation, and chief medical officer.

An accomplished investigator, Seifert has led multiple NIH-funded studies focused on biomarkers, cardiovascular risk and long-term outcomes in pediatric kidney transplantation. He has served as principal investigator on an NIH R01 grant and project leader on an NIH PPG grant, and holds leadership roles in large, multi-center research collaborations. His work has been widely published and recognized with numerous awards, including election as a Fellow of the American Society of Transplantation. In addition, he has demonstrated a strong commitment to mentorship, training the next generation of clinician-scientists, and advancing collaborative research networks.

He earned his medical degree from the University of Connecticut and completed residency training at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center, followed by fellowships in nephrology and transplantation at Boston Children’s Hospital. He also holds a master’s degree in clinical investigation from Washington University in St. Louis and is currently pursuing an MBA at UAB.
