Emmanuel Chandler, MD, has officially been appointed director of Cincinnati Children’s Division of Adolescent and Transition Medicine. Chandler brings a wealth of experience and expertise to this role, having served as the interim director since April 2023.
Professionally, Chandler has been an integral part of Cincinnati Children’s since 2017, serving as an attending and board-certified adolescent medicine physician in the division. He also completed his fellowship in the division in 2017, becoming associate medical director for the division upon graduation. He has held academic appointments at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine as an assistant professor and now as an associate professor of Clinical Pediatrics.
“Dr. Chandler is a natural leader,” said Tina Cheng, MD, MPH, chief medical officer, chair of Pediatrics and director of the Cincinnati Children’s Research Foundation. “He is committed to leading the division with dedication and excellence. His leadership will continue to advance our mission of providing exceptional care to adolescents and young adults.”
His areas of focus within adolescent medicine include young men’s health, sexual and reproductive health, primary care of adolescents, juvenile justice health, mental health, and eating disorders. He has actively collaborated with colleagues on research aimed at promoting health equity and improving care and outcomes for adolescents and young adults in these areas.
“I have had the unique opportunity to be part of the division for the last 10 years, beginning my adolescent medicine fellowship in 2014 and then becoming faculty in 2017,” Chandler said. “This experience has allowed me to see where the division has come from, where it stands currently, and to understand its potential for the future. My goal is to continue elevating our division internationally, nationally and regionally by expanding our existing clinical programs and developing new ones. I aspire to strengthen our research portfolio in our areas of expertise while enhancing our education programs to train the next generation of pediatricians and adolescent medicine physicians.”
Chandler’s leadership experience is extensive. Besides his role as interim division director, he has also served as the associate division director for Clinical Operations and the medical director for the Hamilton County Juvenile Court Youth Center. His contributions to program development have been significant, including the establishment of the Adolescent Medicine Mobile Care Clinic, Substance Use Recovery Program, the relaunch of the Hypermobility Clinic, and expansion of Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis program services.
Chandler has been recognized with numerous awards, such as the Cincinnati Children’s Hidden Gem Award, Christ Emmanuel Christian Fellowship’s Black Impact Achievers Award and inclusion in the Cincinnati Business Courier’s 40 Under 40, among other honors. He has served on the National Commission on Correctional Health Care’s Juvenile Health Committee and the Society of Adolescent Health and Medicine’s Male Health Initiative Committee, as well as other taskforces and councils at Cincinnati Children’s, the Mariemont City School District, Christ Emmanuel Christian Fellowship Church and the Medical University of South Carolina.
He earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from Furman University and a medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina, where he also completed his residency in Pediatrics.
