Doximity Ranks 3 Cincinnati Children’s Residency Programs Among Top 3 in U.S.

Three Cincinnati Children’s residency programs have been ranked among the best in the nation by Doximity’s 2022-2023 Residency Navigator.
The Pediatric Residency Training Program and two other specialty programs—the Internal Medicine and Pediatrics (Med-Peds) Residency and Child Neurology Residency programs—were all ranked No. 3 in the nation for their specialties. The Med-Peds and Child Neurology programs are sponsored by both Cincinnati Children’s and the University of Cincinnati.
Led by Sue Poynter, MD, MEd, a professor in the UC Department of Pediatrics, the Pediatric Residency Program at Cincinnati Children’s is one of the largest in the country, offering both the core categorical pediatric residency and several combined training programs. Thanks to the size and diversity of care offered at Cincinnati Children’s, residents get to experience clinical rotations that cover the spectrum of pediatric care and gain unparalleled experience during their training. Residents also have opportunities to individualize their training experience and engage in research.
The Cincinnati Children’s Meds-Peds Residency Program has a class of seven residents annually and includes both acute care and primary care tracks. Residents see patients at Cincinnati Children’s and UC Medical Center with rare diseases and work alongside subspecialists. They also get an immense amount of exposure to “bread-and-butter” pediatrics and internal medicine via general inpatient services and ambulatory experiences. The combined Pediatrics and Child Neurology Residency at Cincinnati Children’s is a five-year program offering two years of pediatrics training and three years of child neurology training. Co-led by Associate Professors Cameron Thomas, MD, MS, and Charu Venkatesan, MD, PhD, the program provides excellent education along with outstanding patient care and research across a spectrum of pediatric and child neurology subspecialties. Due to its program size, it offers residents the flexibility to tailor their education while the breadth of subspecialty expertise allows them to explore and develop career interests.
The Residency Navigator is a directory of U.S. residency programs created by Doximity, an online networking service for medical professionals. The directory spans 28 specialties.
According to their website, Doximity uses three factors to determine its residency program rankings, including current resident and recent alumni satisfaction data, reputation data and objective data.
Earlier this year, the Department of Pediatrics at Cincinnati Children’s and the UC College of Medicine was ranked as the second-best graduate program in the nation by U.S. News & World Report. Within the past decade, the pediatrics program has consistently been ranked among the top five in the nation, but this was the first time the pediatrics program has attained the No. 2 spot.
