Hydroxyurea Research Gets $7.7M Boost from NHLBI

Russell Ware, MD, PhD, Director, Division of Hematology at Cincinnati Children’s has been awarded a five-year $7.7 million grant from the National Heart, Lung, & Blood Institute to continue his research entitled, “Realizing Effectiveness Across Continents with Hydroxyurea (REACH): A Phase I/II Pilot Study of Hydroxyurea for Children with Sickle Cell Anemia.”

Initial results from the REACH study were published in January 2019 in The New England Journal of Medicine.

Related studies from Ware and colleagues to evaluate and expand hydroxyurea usage include results from the TWiTCH study, published in 2016 in The Lancet; initial results from the NOHARM study, published in Blood in December 2017; the US-based BABY HUG trial, with results published in 2011 in The Lancet; and updated results from the NOHARM study, published in 2020 in The New England Journal of Medicine.
