Summer Undergraduate Research Program Helps Shape the Next Generation of Scientists

Applications for this summer’s highly competitive program are due Feb. 1, 2026.

Cincinnati Children’s is now accepting applications for its highly competitive Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Program, a full-time, 10-week immersive research experience for undergraduate students interested in biomedical science. Each year, approximately 1,000 students apply for just 100 positions, making SURF one of the most sought-after pediatric research training programs in the country.

Throughout the 10 weeks, students participate in a robust slate of scientific seminars, professional development sessions, and social activities, culminating in a Capstone Poster Session that showcases their work. The program continues to demonstrate exceptional outcomes, as approximately 90% of alumni go on to careers or advanced training in biomedical fields.

This year, Cincinnati Children’s has launched SURF Plus, a new track focused on neuro-inclusivity and accessibility for students with disabilities. This expansion reflects the institution’s commitment to building a more inclusive biomedical workforce and ensuring that talented students from all backgrounds can fully participate in research.

“We’re looking forward to another great summer inspiring and training the next generation of biomedical scientists,” Sherry Thornton, PhD, program director, said. “Students have the opportunity to work with more than 700 faculty, many who are leading research in all areas of pediatric medicine, such as developmental biology, congenital disorders, genetic diseases, cancer, cardiology, neurology and immunology.”

A Path of Discovery

Sakura Adachi is a recent SURF graduate. A University of Cincinnati student, she is pursuing dual degrees in marketing and neurobiology while keeping her options open for the future.

Her SURF experience in the lab of Alexander Miethke, MD, medical director of the Liver Transplant Program, didn’t just deepen her scientific skills—it helped her blend analytical and real-world problem-solving skills from her business background. She contributed to research on autoimmune liver disease, gaining practical laboratory skills while learning how interdisciplinary perspectives can strengthen biomedical research. Her time in the program helped clarify her passion for supporting children’s health and demonstrated how SURF empowers undergraduates to grow professionally, explore career paths, and contribute meaningfully to pediatric research.

Who Should Apply

SURF is designed for undergraduate freshmen, sophomores and juniors who are considering careers in biomedical research. Students work 40 hours per week alongside Cincinnati Children’s investigators and research teams, gaining hands-on experience in discovery science, translational research and clinical investigation.

Applications are first reviewed and ranked by a committee. Investigators then receive candidate applications to review and select their prospective trainee. Once matches are finalized, the Office of Academic Affairs and Career Development (OAACD) coordinates onboarding.

A Program Powered by Mentorship

SURF is made possible largely through investigator-supported funding. Each year, approximately 100 mentors volunteer to support the students, creating one of the most impactful research training pipelines in the health system. Additional funding from the Cincinnati Children’s Research Foundation supports program-wide activities and students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
