Metformin Helps Control Weight Gain From Certain Bipolar Medications

The MOBILITY clinical trial–the largest study of its kind–explored a common side effect from prescribing second-generation antipsychotics (SGAs)

Results from the largest and longest study of its kind found the drug metformin plus a healthy lifestyle can help manage weight gain in youth taking SGA medications to treat bipolar disorder and should be adopted as a standard of care treatment.

Led by scientists at the University of Cincinnati and Cincinnati Children’s, data from the MOBILITY trial were published online in November 2025 in The Lancet Psychiatry and will appear in the journal’s December issue.

“This embodies everything good about Children’s and UC’s collaboration and clinic to research evidence-based practices,” says co-author Suzanne Sampang, MD, Interim Division Director, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Cincinnati Children’s.
