Patrick Brady, MD, MSc, and Karen Jerardi, MD, MEd, have been named co-directors of the Hospital Medicine division, effective Nov. 4, 2024.
Jerardi and Brady have served as interim co-directors since January 2023, taking over the role previously held by Samir Shah, MD, MSE, MHM, when he became the Department of Pediatrics vice chair for clinical affairs and education. Shah served as director of Hospital Medicine for 10 years.
“We are thrilled to officially have Karen and Patrick as co-directors of Hospital Medicine,” said Shah. “Over the past two years they have demonstrated continued excellence in research productivity, clinical care, operations, mentorship and extramural funding. Their vision will add to our success in research, innovative clinical care, systems improvement and education.”
Both board-certified physicians and accomplished scientists, Jerardi and Brady oversee a renowned team of more than 70 faculty, fellows and staff who provide care to more than 10,000 Cincinnati Children’s patients each year. The division’s clinical practice includes inpatient care at the Burnet and Liberty campuses. Team members care for children hospitalized for acute illnesses like bronchiolitis, pneumonia, and asthma exacerbations as well as hospitalized children with complex chronic diseases. The division also partners to care for medically complex children recovering from surgery through the Hospital Medicine Surgical Services Group and for hospitalized young adults through the Hospital Medicine Adult Care Service. Team members lead research, quality improvement, educational and advocacy initiatives, and many hold institutional leadership positions, including those focused on enhancing diversity, equity, inclusion and community engagement.
Brady, who is also the division’s research director, is an improvement scientist and health services researcher who focuses on designing, testing and evaluating evidence-based interventions to improve the quality and safety of hospital care. He also serves on the executive committee of the Pediatric Research in Inpatient Setting (PRIS) national network, which works to improve healthcare delivery to hospitalized children, and is also the editor-in-chief of Hospital Pediatrics, one of the official journals of the American Academy of Pediatrics. He has received several awards over the span of his career, including the Cincinnati Children’s Clinical Care Award and the National Pediatric Hospital Medicine Award for Excellence in Quality and Safety.
Jerardi, who serves as the division’s clinical operations associate director, focuses her research on finding the best ways to train future pediatricians and pediatric hospitalists to provide the highest quality, safest care for children admitted to the hospital. She served as program director of the PHM fellowship from 2014-2022. Jerardi has received multiple awards throughout her career, including the Cincinnati Children’s Faculty Award for Educational Achievement and the National Pediatric Hospital Medicine Award for Educational Excellence for her work in developing a nationwide standard training program for pediatric hospital medicine doctors. She has led the clinical operations for the division since 2017, a time that has seen tremendous growth in both patient volume and complexity.
