June 8 is BK Rachford Day in Cincinnati

“100 years. 100 years of leading the way in pediatric medicine. Children’s Hospital and UC Medicine are some of the crown jewels of our Queen City. It is amazing how much has been accomplished in 100 years and will be accomplished over the next 100 years,”

— Cincinnati Mayor John Cranley

Leaders at Cincinnati Children’s thanked Cranley for the proclamation and reflected on the milestone:

“This proclamation recognizes 100 years of incredible progress in clinical care, education and research for the benefit of children and families led by the BK Rachford Department of Pediatrics at the University of Cincinnati and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.  We celebrate a century of healing and discovery as we create the future for children,” says Tina Cheng, MD, MPH, current BK Rachford Professor, Chair of Pediatrics, and Director, Cincinnati Children’s Research Foundation.

“The scientific breakthroughs, like polio and rotavirus vaccines and surfactant for premature babies, and world class patient care, have not only helped Cincinnati children but have made the City of Cincinnati known for its embrace of child health as a major component of its culture.  We look forward to building on that relationship to continue to improve child health in the next 100 years—locally and globally.  We are grateful for Cincinnati as a partner in that endeavor,” says Thomas DeWitt, MD, FAAP,  Chair, Cincinnati Children’s Alumni Association and Co-Director, Cincinnati Children’s Pediatric Education Center.

“Mary Emery’s generous gift endowed the Department of Pediatrics and started it on its way to becoming the academic and clinical powerhouse it is known as today. Cincinnati Children’s is known throughout the world for its clinical care and research that have benefited untold numbers of children. It was all set into motion by Mary Emery’s gifts. Cincinnati Children’s has been blessed with great leadership that has propelled the department into the upper echelons of child health. We are honored to be celebrating this centennial milestone,” says Michael Farrell, MD, Chair of the Cincinnati Children’s Historical Committee.
