Former CEO Jim Anderson has been selected as one of four outstanding community leaders to be named the 2025 Great Living Cincinnatians by the Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber.
Anderson joins an elite group of nine other people from Cincinnati Children’s to receive this significant honor, including: Uma Kotagal, MBBS, MS, Judith Van Ginkel, PhD, Victor Garcia, MD, Alvin Crawford, MD, Tom Cody, Lee Carter, Bea Lampkin, MD, William Schubert, MD, and Albert Sabin, MD.
The honorees will be celebrated at the Cincinnati Chamber’s Annual Dinner in February. Anderson served as a Cincinnati Children’s leader for more than 20 years, including roles as a board member and board chair before he became CEO (1996-2010). During his years of service, he helped reshape Cincinnati Children’s from a locally focused organization to a global leader in pediatric health.
Anderson’s numerous contributions include driving a quality improvement transformation at Cincinnati Children’s through participating in the Robert Wood Johnson Pursuing Perfection Initiative in 2001. Under his leadership, Cincinnati Children’s achieved its first top 10 rankings in the U.S. News and World Report’s list of Best Children’s Hospitals.
Anderson also oversaw the launch of Every Child Succeeds in partnership with the United Way and the Hamilton County Community Action Agency, a home visiting agency that has served more than 30,000 low-income first-time mothers and their children during their first three years of development.
Anderson’s staunch advocacy for quality improvement helped establish Cincinnati Children’s as a premier pediatric institution focused on patient-centered outcomes.
A year after his retirement, Cincinnati Children’s launched the James M. Anderson Center for Health Systems Excellence to continue serving as a catalyst for improving child health and accelerate the reach and pace of improvement both within our walls and beyond them. After all these years, we continue to embrace Anderson’s advice: “Be bold, pursue excellence, start before you are ready but above all start.”
