The new leader has previously led both Cincinnati Children’s Adolescent Type 2 Diabetes Program and Endocrinology Research Operations.

Amy Sanghavi Shah, MD, MS, has been selected as the division director of Endocrinology, beginning February 10. She succeeds Larry Dolan, MD, who has led the division since 2010 and will continue as faculty.

Currently a professor and director of both the Adolescent Type 2 Diabetes Program and Endocrinology Research Operations, as division director she will oversee 21 faculty and 12 fellows, manage division budgets, and foster a collaborative environment to improve health outcomes for children with endocrine disorders. She also will be responsible for developing transformational clinical and research programs, recruiting and mentoring faculty, and ensuring compliance with medical regulations.

“The Endocrinology division is already a global leader in research, education, and clinical care, and is poised to be even more impactful in the coming years,” said Paul Spearman, MD, search committee chair and vice chair for clinical translational research and education. “Dr. Shah’s strong record of leadership, innovation and passion for improving child health make her an ideal fit to lead our internationally recognized team.”

Shah’s research focuses on youth-onset type 2 diabetes and its long-term health impacts, with numerous publications and NIH-funded studies. Her work aims to improve understanding and treatment of diabetes-related complications in youth.

Shah holds a bachelor’s degree in biology from The University of Texas at Austin and a medical degree from St. George’s University Medical School in Grenada, West Indies. She completed her pediatric residency at Loyola University Medical Center, followed by a clinical and research fellowship in Pediatric Endocrinology at Cincinnati Children’s. She also earned a master’s degree in clinical and translational research from the University of Cincinnati.

Her leadership extends to her roles as study chair for Cincinnati Children’s GAP and Research Innovation and Pilot (RIP) funding programs. Her contributions to the field have been recognized with numerous awards, including the Young Investigator Award from the International Society of Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes, the National Lipid Association and the American Society of Clinical Investigation. She is also an elected member of the Society of Pediatric Research, American Pediatric Society and a fellow of the National Lipid Association.

“Dr. Dolan has been instrumental in the division gaining international recognition for excellence in clinical care, education and research,” said Tina Cheng, MD, MPH, director of the Cincinnati Children’s Research Foundation, chair of Pediatrics at the University of Cincinnati, and chief medical officer. “We are very grateful for his 15 years of service and look forward to working with Dr. Shah to build on these divisional successes and further excellence in endocrinology.”
