Congratulations to these Cincinnati Children’s scientists who have recently been recognized in their fields of expertise. 

Mary Greiner Elected Chairperson of AAP Council on Foster Care, Adoption, and Kinship Care
Mary Greiner, MD, MS, medical director of the CHECK Foster Care Center, was elected the next chairperson of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAPs) Council on Foster Care, Adoption and Kinship Care. Greiner’s role will begin in summer 2025. This council is dedicated to improving the health and well-being of children and youth in foster care, kinship care and those who have been adopted.


Daniel Lovell Receives Juvenile Arthritis Legacy Award for Health Care Provider Leadership
Daniel Lovell, MD, MPH, professor and associate director, Division of Rheumatology, was named the 2024 recipient of the Arthritis Foundation’s Juvenile Arthritis Legacy Award for Health Care Provider Leadership. This award is given to a healthcare provider who has shown unwavering commitment to enhancing the treatment of children with arthritis and rheumatic diseases, honoring their significant lifelong contributions.


Neurogastroenterology and Motility Disorders Team Named an IB-Stim Center of Excellence
The Neurogastroenterology and Motility Disorders team has been named an IB-Stim Center of Excellence by the medical technology company, NeurAxis. IB-Stim is a non-surgical treatment for abdominal pain associated with irritable bowel syndrome that is typically worn for five consecutive days each week for four weeks. This non-surgical device sends gentle electrical impulses into cranial nerve bundles located in the ear and targets brain areas that process pain associated with the syndrome. 


Ekemini Ogbu Named Chair of ACR Pediatric Rheumatology Committee
Ekemini Ogbu, MD, MSc, was elected the chair of the American College of Rheumatology’s Committee on Pediatric Rheumatology. This committee focuses on advancing pediatric rheumatology through the support of clinical care, research, education and advocacy. Ogbu is director of the Neuroinflammatory Disease Services in Rheumatology, co-director of the Cincinnati Children’s Lupus Center and an assistant professor in the Division of Rheumatology.


Ohio AAP Receives Outstanding Very Large Chapter Award
The Ohio chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) received the 2023 Outstanding Very Large Chapter award at the annual leadership conference. Cincinnati Children’s faculty are highly involved with the Ohio AAP.  Kelsey Logan, MD, MPH, division director of Sports Medicine, currently serves as the president, and Chris Peltier, MD, director of the Community Section in the Division of General and Community Pediatrics, was the immediate past president.


Wendy Pomerantz Receives 2024 Fellow Achievement Award from the AAP Council on Injury, Violence, and Poison Prevention
Wendy Pomerantz, MD, MS, received the 2024 Fellow Achievement Award from the American Academy of Pediatrics Council on Injury, Violence, and Poison Prevention. This prestigious award, considered a lifetime achievement honor, recognizes an AAP Fellow who has made an exceptional contribution to the field of injury, violence, and poison prevention. Pomerantz is co-director of both the Comprehensive Children’s Injury Center and the Injury Free Coalition for Kids, and professor, Division of Emergency Medicine.


Takanori Takebe Receives Ig Nobel Prize Award For “Butt-Breathing” Study
Takanori Takebe, MD, PhD, and colleagues from Japan received the ultimate snarky scientific honor: an Ig Nobel Prize. The team was recognized for demonstrating that mammals can “breathe” through their butts—a discovery that quite seriously might save lives someday. A human clinical trial to explore the safety and effectiveness of this approach has begun in Japan.

Gap Funding Award Recipients

The Cincinnati Children’s Gap Funding program provides one year of support to maintain R-level research programs at the NIH or the equivalent. The recent recipients are: 

  • Roger Cornwall, MD, pediatric hand surgeon and clinical director, Division of Pediatric Orthopaedics, director, Hand and Upper Extremity Surgery Fellowship, and professor, UC Department of Orthopedic Surgery 


Research Innovation and Pilot (RIP) Funding Recipients

This funding program is for projects that are unusual (Innovation) or alternatively, are essential (Pilot) and are therefore good candidates for external funding after preliminary data has been obtained. The recent recipients are: 

  • Andrew Volk, PhD, assistant professor, Experimental Hematology and Cancer Biology 
  • Braxton Forde, MD, maternal-fetal medicine specialist, Cincinnati Fetal Center, assistant professor, UC Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology 
  • Ting Ting Fu, MD, attending neonatologist, Neonatology and Pulmonary Biology, and associate professor 


2024 Pilot and Feasibility Grant Recipients

The Digestive Health Center’s funding program is for pilot projects to conduct basic, translational, patient-based or outcomes research broadly relating to pediatric digestive disease. The recent recipients are: 

  • Maria Fields, PhD, assistant professor, Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition
